Director de cine francés nacido en Chateauneuf-en-Thymerais. Sus primeros pasos en el cine fueron como asistente de Gilles Grangier, René Clair y Orson Welles en L’aventure de Cabassou (1945), La belleza del diablo (1949), Las maniobras del amor (1955) y Mr. Arkadin (1954), entre otras. En Act of love, de Anatole Litvak, su trayectoria se cruza por primera vez con la de Brigitte Bardot, a quién dirigirá, desde su debut como director, en varias películas, entre ellas Esa pícara colegiala (1956), Una parisina (1957), ¿Quiere usted bailar conmigo? (1959) y Amores célebres (1961). Su éxito le sitúa entre los mejores directores franceses de la época. En 1960 vuelve a encontrarse con su amigo y maestro René Clair en la película de episodios La francesa y el amor. Con Cómo triunfar en el amor (1962) y Cómo casarse con un primer ministro (1964), comienza una serie de comedias románticas que alterna con producciones de género y trabajos para la televisión. En 1967 interpreta un pequeño papel en El silencio de un hombre de Jean-Pierre Melville.
