El joven proefsor Konrad Koch es elegido para enseñar inglés en una regia y disciplinada escuela alemana de finales del siglo XIX. El reformador director de la institución Von Merfeld ha contratado a Koch como uno de los primeros profesores de inglés dentro de la caduca institución, con el fin de introducir un nuevo vigor en ella. Pronto, Koch se da cuenta de lo necesario que es introducir muchas otras reformas.

El cuerpo de bomberos de élite de Berlín, dirigido por Horst Strasser, regresa nuevamente a la torre de televisión, lugar en el que un año antes falleció el hijo de Strasser debido a la negligencia de Tom, un joven bombero. En esta ocasión se enfrentan a un terrible fuego en el restaurante de la torre, donde han quedado atrapadas 80 personas, siendo una de ellas Katja, novia de Tom e hija de Horst. Saltándose las normas de seguridad, Tom, que ahora trabaja como taxista, se adentra en la torre en llamas. Dentro, los bomberos constatan que el derrumbamiento de las escaleras, la imposibilidad de evacuar a los turistas y las altas temperaturas que registra la plataforma de observación hacen inviable el rescate del grupo...
