Historia

Director de cine francés nacido en Luzarches. Su familia tuvo que exilarse al Reino Unido al comenzar la Primera Guerra Mundial debido a los ideales políticos de su madre. A su regreso en 1919 a Francia, Claude tomó contacto con el cine, comenzando a trabajar como decorador del director Marcel L'Herbier. Sus primeras obras son cortometrajes, como Construire un feu, de 1928, en el que utilizó un objetivo anamórfico predecesor del cinemascope. En 1933 dirigió su primer y polémico largometraje, Ciboulette, que acabó siendo censurada por los productores y relegándole a un segundo plano durante años. En una de sus siguientes películas, Douce, abordó una dura crítica a la familia y a las clases sociales más elevadas, criticando su hipocresía. Su imagen de cineasta polémico continuó con las siguientes películas, pero la crítica de la Nouvelle Vague, en los años 50, lo tildó de director falsamente crítico y de cineasta burgués. Su carrera continuó con películas de menor importancia. Su filmografía incluye El diablo en el cuerpo (1947), El alberge rojo (1951), El rojo y el negro (1954), La travesía de París (1956), El bosque de los amantes (1960), El Conde de Montecristo (1962) y Gloria (1977).
