Director de cine francés, nacido en París. Licenciado en Derecho, a lo largo de los años treinta se movió en ambientes intelectuales de izquierda, al tiempo que consolidó sus primeros trabajos en el mundo del cine abordando diversos cometidos, hasta que se convirtió en ayudante de algunos de los más importantes directores franceses de la época, Cavalcanti, Renoir, Féjos y su hermano Marc, entre otros. Su carrera comenzó con una serie de problemas centrados en sus primeras películas, perdidas o inacabadas. Su matrimonio con la actriz Simone Signoret permitió que ambos trabajaran juntos en varias películas, entre las que destaca Dedé de Amberes (1948). A lo largo de su carrera mantendría un pulso entre las historias bien definidas, con una buena dirección de actores entre las que cabe señalar Los orgullosos (1953), y aquellas otras más comerciales. Dirigió Oasis (1954), la primera película francesa en CinemaScope. Es el padre de la actriz Cathérine Allégret.
