El psiquiatra Ed Altman ha de mudarse a otra ciudad para escapar de una acusación de acoso sexual. Una vez en Palm Springs, el doctor tiene una aventura con una mujer adinerada llamada Ally que está planeando involucrar a Ed en el asesinato de su esposo. Ally tiene un amante, Nick, y hace tiempo que quiere deshacerse de su marido. Es por esto que ve en el psiquiatra una oportunidad inigualable para acabar con él y que ella y su novio salgan impunes. Ally llama a Ed en mitad de la noche y le dice que su marido le está pegando. Cuando este se presenta en casa, descubre que el hombre está muerto y se da cuenta entonces del plan urdido por la mujer. Ella y su novio han huido y al psiquiatra, dados sus antecedentes, le va a costar mucho demostrar su inocencia.
