Is it plausible that the life of a renowned general, an excellent hunter and a respected poet should come to such a fatal end? Who was he whose terrible fate was facilitated even by such potentates as Louis XIV, the Sun King?

La película nos lleva a la Hungría de los años posteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y en la que la sombra comunista es una realidad, que no dejará en paz a los habitantes de este país. En este contexto la película nos presenta a dos mujeres que no pueden ser más diferentes entre sí. La primera es una intelectual que se dedica a escribir y de mediana edad, mientras que la segunda es una mujer mayor que se ha criado en contacto con la naturaleza, y que entra a trabajar como ama de llaves de la primera. Ambas discuten muy a menudo, puesto que al ser tan distintas, la una intenta influir en la vida de la otra y viceversa, intentos que siempre acaban con sonoras riñas, aunque su relación laboral no se ve afectada. El ama de llaves es una mujer muy enigmática, puesto que no quiere que nadie vaya a su casa, y en el caso de que alguien se acerque nunca les permite pasar de la puerta. Poco a poco, nos daremos cuenta de que esconde un secreto terrible.

Libremente inspirada en un episodio que marca el fin de la carrera del filósofo Friedrich Nietzsche. El 3 de enero de 1889, en la plaza Alberto de Turín, Nietzsche se lanzó llorando al cuello de un caballo agotado y maltratado por su cochero y, después, se desmayó. Desde entonces, dejó de escribir y se hundió en la locura y el mutismo. En una atmósfera preapocalíptica, se nos muestra la vida del cochero, su hija y del viejo caballo.

Two stories running in parallel: In one, a model is surrounded by men wanting to use and abuse her though, without realizing it, she is protected by a strange tramp guardian angel. In the other, a blind goldsmith struggles to produce his latest commission in the midst of his alcoholism and depression. Both then descend further and further into their own personal hells until they finally re-find peace with themselves and then their stories briefly merge.

También está Béla, el maquinista caído, quien se siente tan cómodo en el mundo de parias como Bulcsú. Y está Szofi, su hija, de quien inmediatamente se enamora Bulcsú, incluso a pesar de que viste un disfraz de oso. Aunque también hay una figura sombría entre ellos, una máquina de matar. Nadie sabe quién es. Quizá sólo Bulcsú lo sabe.
