Het onzegbare
Script
Since its release in 2005, Jan Siebelink's novel Kneeling on a Bed of Violets , dealing with his father's pitch-black Calvinism, has strongly stirred up - Christian - emotions across the nation. 'The book has become a phenomenon', the publisher said at the presentation of the 400,000th copy. Director Pieter Verhoeff follows Jan Siebelink on his jaunts along jam-packed libraries and churches, where readers hang on his lips. The eloquent Siebelink has a kind word for everybody: 'I feel they have the right to get acquainted with the author.' At home, ensconced in the intimacy of his living room, Siebelink explains his personal motives for writing the novel. His statements are illustrated by relevant passages from the book, drawn by artist Dick Matena and read out by actor Gijs Scholten van Aschat. This gradually provides insight in the novel and its writer, and describes the present-day leaning towards religion of many Dutch people.

A Happy Hand
Writer
By alternating documentary with fiction, a portrait is drawn of Peter van Straaten, eminent draughtsman of political cartoons, the long-term Parool serial Agnes and a countless series of painfully comical sketches of everyday life. Interviews with Van Straaten - outside, at home and at work - smoothly merge with dramatised excerpts from Agnes (played by people like Renée Fokker, Pierre Bokma and Hans Kesting). 'That's me, dressed up as a woman', he says about this creation. The camera peeks over his shoulder when Van Straaten makes his black-and-white drawings with pen and ink. His humour is harsh; he draws people in all their spinelessness, sadness and dishonesty, with a remarkable eye to facial expressions and postures. Through his drawings and stories, he also talks about his personal experiences with alcohol, relationships, family, health and sex - and his lifelong love for birds in the open field.

Rudy Schokker huilt niet meer
Director
Fake documentary, inspired by Igor Stravinsky's text “Noise pollution not only transforms nature, but also its ruler, Man”. The director and scriptwriter wonder to what extent man is capable of adapting to the abundant noise he is exposed to. At the centre of the film is the Schokker family. When their son Rudy cries, he produces the sound of a fighter jet.
