Director de cine francés nacido en París. Autor de films muy modernos para la época donde mezclaba los dramas personales con la épica colectiva. Hijo de dramaturgo Tristan Bernard y hermano de Jean-Jacques Bernard, era judio, por lo que tuvo que ocultarse durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y por ese motivo no dirigió ninguna película entre 1940 y 1946. Debutó con la pelicula Le ravin sans fond, junto a Jacques Feyder en 1917. Peliculas destacables de su filmografía son, Los Miserables (1934), Cabalgada de amor (1940), El juicio de Dios (1952) y La bella de Cádiz (1953). Les croix de bois (1932), es su auténtica obra maestra, uno de los más impresionantes y críticos films sobre y contra la violencia y los horrores de la guerra.
