After her husband's death in Germany, an attractive young widow leaves his native village in Herzegovina to work abroad. There she starts an affair with an Italian worker that proves to be unsuccessful, yet she gets pregnant. She does an abortion, which is followed by another blow - her godfather Luka steals her hard-earned money.

August 1914. In the village of Öd, the maid Rumplhanni has a love affair with Simon, son of the farmer Hauser. Before he goes to war, she dizzy to him, she expects a child from him. Simon can persuade his parents to say goodbye to Hanni as a daughter-in-law. Thus she has achieved what she wanted: to come out of the state of an illegitimate maid and to become peasant woman with house and farm. Since the old farmer wants to give her but nothing written, Hanni sets out another plan ...

Through his commitment, he finds himself increasingly exposed to violence and eventually kills a person. During the interrogation by the public prosecutor, he experiences the purgatory of his awakening.

A department manager has to defend himself in court against charges of harassment in the workplace. Looking back, he describes his tough day at work to the judge.
