Nicholas Garrigan es un joven médico escocés que, buscando nuevas experiencias, se desplaza hacia Uganda en los años setenta para trabajar en la ayuda humanitaria. Nada más llegar debe atender a Idi Amín, el nuevo líder del país, que ha sufrido un aparatoso accidente al chocar su vehículo con una vaca. Este primer encuentro fascina al dirigente y hace que Nicholas se convierta en su médico personal. El joven se deja seducir por la cautivadora personalidad del gobernador y pronto se convierte en su confidente más íntimo.
