Marianne y Jacques llevan una existencia aparentemente tranquila junto a sus dos hijos en un gran apartamento parisino, sin conocer la tragedia que allí tuvo lugar. Un día en que Marianne se encuentra sola, recibe la visita de una siniestra pareja de ancianos, que dicen haber vivido en el apartamento cuando eran niños.
