The film was based on Vinod Chopra's diploma film at FTII, Murder at Monkey Hill (1976). He adapted that into a full-length feature, with Naseeruddin Shah and Radha Saluja, respectively, playing the roles that he, himself, and Anjali Paigankar had played in the short film.

Because it was humbled that by his betrothed, Murugan a nice provincial, puts itself to find in the capital, an even more beautiful and more intelligent wife who will be the liked for what he is : A simple man of the campaign. 'Idhayakkani' is the story of the kind-hearted Mohan (MGR) whose theory of life is 'equality' and who puts it in practice by sharing equally the income of his estate with his labourers. He has another passion - he wants to serve the country - and for that, he has joined the police force as an officer. He meets a needy girl, Lakshmi, and on the advice of and elderly domestic help, he permits her to stay in his house. Tongues start wagging and Mohan decides to marry the girl. This Punjabi Movie, Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam is a Punjabi movie about Sikhism. It was a great success. It portrays the people's belief in the almighty god who is one and how life teaches a lesson to those who does not believe so.

Monica Kapoor lives a wealthy lifestyle in London, England. When she hears that her estranged brother, Kishan, has been killed while traveling in a train, she returns home to India and asks his much younger and drop dead gorgeous widow, Shobha, to move out so that she could sell the house, pick up the cash, return to London and get married to her boyfriend, Manoj. She does get to sell the house and compels Shobha to move in with Kishan's friend, Amar, but Manoj steals the cash and disappears. Humbled by this incident, Monica also moves in with Amar and Shobha, as well as Amar's younger brother, Chickoo, and ends up falling in love with Amar. She decides to marry him at the Registrar's Office. When he does not show, she returns home and finds him getting intimate with Shobha.

Sunil Mehta is a businessman married to a pretty and loving wife, Geeta. Sunil's only problem is she is easily led to suspicion. One day while returning from office, Sunil is attracted by the sight of a wayside carnival and decides to try the Giant Wheel drive reminiscing his childhood days. Unfortunately, Sunil gets stuck in mid-air due to a mechanical problem in the Giant Wheel and is unable to return home till the next morning. Geeta suspects Sunil is seeing someone else and even though Sunil says the truth to Geeta, she doesn't believe it and so starts a hilarious and twisted tale that engulfs three happily married couples.

Kamal, a governess, falls in love with Ashok. Things, however, take an odd turn when Ashok marries her friend, Radha. Soon after the marriage, Radha meets with an accident.

Trouble arises in the lives of a happy couple after she gets sold to Jonardhan, a guy with evil intentions, and he is framed in a case of theft and sent to jail.
