Durante la II Guerra Mundial un escuadrón de hombres atacó y violó sin piedad a muchas mujeres de origen judío. Se les llamó “Joy Division”. El terror que sembraban entre la población era aún mayor que el que causaba la propia guerra. Thomas, que de adolescente había luchado contra el Ejército Rojo, logra huir hacia el Oeste junto a una joven aliada. Finalmente, los rusos lo capturan y desaparece sin dejar rastro.

Juli es una adolescente criada en la Unión Soviética y repatriada a Hungría en los años previos a los sucesos de 1956. Allí deberá convivir con su tía Magda, una estalinista convencida, con la que mantendrá una relación progresivamente hostil.

Vuk es el pequeño de una familia de zorros al que su madre acurruca con sus hermanos para el descanso nocturno, mientras el padre aprovecha la oscuridad de la noche para salir a cazar. El pequeño Vuk siente curiosidad por saber cómo se las compone su padre para conseguir el alimento que los sustenta... y sigilosamente abandona la madriguera para seguirle. Esta travesura hará que se pierda en el bosque y le salvará de una muerte segura, pues el implacable humano ha dado con la madriguera del zorro acabando con sus padres y hermanos. Triste y solo en el bosque, Vuk tiene la suerte de encontrar a su tío Karak, quien se hará cargo del pequeño enseñándole todo lo necesario para subsistir y previniéndole de la maldad del humano, que no mata sólo para sobrevivir sino también por placer...

Jutka, a young woman who works in a factory, falls in love with Andras, a university student. She pretends to be a student, to him and to his parents, and begins to live a lie. Finally she rebels against Andras and his demands and the social conventions that forced her to live a lie.

Edit, who became the wife of a politician out of a simple peasant girl, suddenly becomes a widow as a result of an accident. She never loved her husband. She lives a wealthy and lonely life amidst false friends, facing one of the last alternatives of her life, i.e. having to face her past in the hope of an independent new beginning.

Andris is almost an adolescent boy. He would need the trust and encouragement of his family. But his father is too much preoccupied with his moral problems in his job. He has the choice either to make a fuss about the corruption discovered at the company or he tries to cover it up skilfully.

A new teacher arrives at the secondary grammar school. The girls are all crazy for the handsome, blonde young man, except for the most excellent pupil, Balázs Ági. Yet Pali starts paying his attentions to no one else but her.

Panni, coming from a landless family of ten and Miska have loved each other for a long time. The pretty Panni, however, has another suitor as well: Komáromi, the big farmer. The two men fight from time to time, but then, during the time Miska is serving his military duty, Panni marries Komáromi to end the tremendous squalor of her family.

In the vocational school the professionally excellent Dani János works on his own invention in his leisure time, but he does not like learning. However, even his own father learns in the evenings, he will become a teacher.
