Four very different people live in the same building but avoid each other because of differences in how they live their lives, what they believe in, and where they come from. They would probably never exchange a word, but misfortune pushes them towards each other. Their lives entangle in ways that profoundly challenge deep-held beliefs and prejudices surrounding material status, sexual orientation, nationality and religion. Slowly, and even painfully, they begin to open up to each other and recognize the essential humanity each of them possesses.

Más que un difícil momento familiar, esta situación conlleva otra de naturaleza política y religiosa: hay que dar los últimos sacramentos al abuelo con un cura ortodoxo y enterrarlo en un cementerio situado en territorio "enemigo". Y es que la familia vive en un enclave serbio cristiano en medio de una gran comunidad albanesa musulmana en unas condiciones difíciles marcadas por los trayectos en vehículos blindados bajo la protección de la comunidad internacional, los cortes de electricidad, los robos de ganado y los desplazamientos por el enclave serbio en carros de caballos.

El tiempo de los gitanos

Perhan vive en el sur de Yugoslavia con su devota abuela Hatidža (Ljubica Adžović), su alocado tío Merdžan y su hermana Danira, enferma de osteomielitis. Perhan está enamorado de Azra (Silonicka Trpkova), pero la madre de esta lo desprecia por su pobreza y por ser el hijo de un esloveno no gitano. Un día llega Ahmed (Bora Todorovic), el "jeque de los gitanos" que solicita los poderes mágicos de Hatidža para sanar a su hijo. A cambio, Ahmed llevará a Danira a Liubliana, donde la curarán de su enfermedad. Perhan la acompañará. Luego de dejar a Danira en el hospital, Ahmed lleva a Perhan a Milán, donde éste descubre que aquél maneja un negocio de explotación de prostitutas y niños mendigos.

Luka Banjanin is an unemployed young man living with his parents in Belgrade. He hangs out with few devoted friends who, like him, are yet to find place in a society that discarded young intellectuals. He plays saxophone and dreams about going to Oktoberfest, the annual beer festival in Munich, but he's being unable to get passport because of a smaller drug incident he had in the past. Totally careless about his long-term girlfriend, he suddenly falls for a mysterious woman who seems to appear in the same places as him, and then vanishes as quickly as possible. Believing that he's at the wrong place at the wrong time, Luka wanders from one misadventure to another, gradually losing the contact with reality and living out his own Oktoberfest in his mind.
