Long time ago in ancient Japan, human beings could still see Yokai monsters and were afraid of them. Though a son of the leader of all Yokai monsters, Mikoshi Nyudo, an adorable looking monster, Tofu Boy, has no talent in scaring the human beings. He is always scolded by his father and laughed at by his monster friends. One day, he decides to go on a journey to find out about the meaning of his life as a Yokai monster and to see his mother he's never met before.

The year is 1947, during the war torn period of the Showa era. The story begins when a man, presumed to have been killed in battle, returns home. Who was this man? Before the war, he had a bright future ahead of him as the proficient and popular rakugoka (comedic story-teller), Usagi Morinoya. However, because of an injury sustained during the war, his face is covered in bandages, and he suffers from total amnesia. As if trying to recover his memory, the man only keeps mumbling in a hollow voice his trademark rakugo, "Sokotsunagaya".

Sakiko is a typical teenager in many ways. She hates her divorced father, who chases after every skirt he sees. She does not know, if she will ever be loved by the other sex. When her dad suddenly inherits a lot of money and becomes really lazy, she hates him even more. He finally decides to start his own cafe, where Sakiko, of course has to help. From this moment, strange customers and good-looking waitresses form the center of tension between father and daughter.

Ichitaro's adventure goes on. He starts to feel earthquakes, which no-one else does, and a voice telling to kill Ichitaro. His grandma gives him one flower's seeds and also tells Ichitaro's mother to let him go to Hakone. Mother approves it and Ichitaro takes up a trip to Hakone with Matsunosuke, Hakutaku and Sasuke, but only two of them arrive to Hakone, where earth trembles even more and people are more vulgar.

A series of murders of beautiful girls occur in Tokyo not long after the end of the war. Also the daughter of a retired actress, Yuzuki Yoko, has gone missing. In the meantime, a religious cult that claims to shut away misfortunes in a box has been gaining popularity, displaying an eerie aspect. Yoko's daughter is alleged to have been run over by a train, and taken into a research institute situated in a gigantic box-shaped building. A private detective Enokizu (Abe Hiroshi), a writer Sekiguchi (Shiina Kippei), a journalist Atsuko and a police detective Kiba each pursues their own case, and Chuzenji (Tsutsumi Shinichi), an owner of a secondhand bookshop, "Kyogoku Do" suspects that all cases are linked to the box-shaped research institute.

La película, basada en un manga de Kodansha escrito por Makoto Oshii, y producida por Madhouse y Shochiku cuenta la historia de Shuei un chico de 5º grado que desea convertirse en pianista. Al ser transferido de escuela conoce a Kinpira quien decide gastarle una novatada. Kirinpa le insiste a Shuei a tocar un extraño piano que se encuentra escondido en un bosque, obviamente conocido como “El bosque del piano” sin saber que dicho piano no emite sonido alguno. Es gracias a otro compañero, Kai Ichinose, quien pone al descubierto la broma, aunque Shuei insiste en ir al bosque y toca ese piano. Al termino de la escuela, ambos deciden ir al bosque en busca del famoso piano. Extrañamente, Shuei no logra hacer que el piano emita sonido alguno mientras que Kai sí logra hacerlo. Kyogokudo is a used book seller who doubles as an onmyouji, or Heian style occultist. His friend Sekiguchi brings him the story of a woman who has been pregnant for twenty months. Sekiguchi investigates further with the help of his friend Enokizu, a detective with the unusual ability to see people's memories. They are hired by the impossibly pregnant woman's sister to find the woman's missing husband and lay this whole matter to rest. In the end, they need the help of Kyogokudo to exorcise the family curse.

Set in a (fictional) student dormitory at Tokyo Metropolitan University, which is in danger of being closed down, the film depicts the emotional exchange between students struggling to keep the dormitory alive and a prefect sent in by the university. Inspired by the movement to preserve the Komaba Dormitory at the University of Tokyo, the story differs greatly from historical fact.

Nami Matsushima has escaped from the prison to which she was sentenced in Scorpion, but is now obsessed with tracking down the--don't laugh--one-armed man who murdered her younger sister fifteen years ago. Nami is certainly no great action heroine, and the plot at times makes little sense, climaxing with a coincidence more ridiculous than any Shakespeare ever used. For complicated reasons, Nami uses her medical knowledge to break into a women's prison as staff physician. There, as in the previous movie, the convicts wind up naked awfully frequently.

Chunba and Kotetsu, grows up in the working class neighborhood of Kishiwada in Osaka in the mid-seventies. Their life in school is a never-ending series of fights and reprisals against rival gangs landing them in trouble with organised crime and in the juvenile court.
