Historia

Director de cine danés, nacido en Arthus. La educación de Gabriel Axel se benefició de la cultura danesa y francesa. En Dinamarca estudió interpretación en la Escuela Dramática del Teatro Real y después recorrió los escenarios de su país y de Francia, con Louis Jouvet, antes de convertirse en uno de los directores más relevantes de Dinamarca. Desde que estrenó su primera película, Altid Ballade (1955), hasta que tuvo repercusión internacional pasaron más de treinta años, en los que estuvo alternando labores de guionista y actor. Fue El festín de Babette el título que le dio a conocer al ganar el Óscar a la mejor película extranjera de 1987. En ella ahondaba en las relaciones entre católicos y protestantes, centrándose en la convivencia de una cocinera y las dos hermanas para las que trabaja. A través de una práctica habitual en el cine europeo, el ritual de la comida, se exorcizan las diferencias, los problemas, los deseos, y se acaba produciendo un acercamiento entre los personajes. Su siguiente título exportable fue La verdadera historia de Hamlet, príncipe de Dinamarca (1993), que contó entre el reparto con Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren y Christian Bale. Fue precisamente gracias a éste último que la película se distribuyó en EEUU. Cientos de fans pidieron a la distribuidora, Miramax, disponer de otro título más de su ídolo. Ésta, no muy convencida de que la película fuese a funcionar, la reeditó, cambió la banda sonora y le puso otro título antes de que pasara por las pantallas americanas. Participó en Lumière y compañía, un proyecto conjunto entre Francia, Dinamarca, España y Suecia en el que un grupo de directores se comprometía a rodar un cortometraje cada uno con la sola ayuda de la cámara inventada por los hermanos Lumière.

In this teen-oriented film, Christian (Christensen) is a young man in search of love, who restlessly leaves his home in Denmark to search for it all over Europe, finally finding some semblance of it in Morocco. This slight film is directed by Gabriel Axel, who also directed Babette's Feast. It is likeliest to be of interest to fans of the star and his music, which is used throughout.
