Christian, mánager de un museo de arte contemporáneo, se encarga de una exhibición titulada "The Square" en la que hay una instalación que fomenta valores humanos y altruistas. Cuando contrata a una agencia de relaciones públicas para difundir el evento, la publicidad produce malestar en el público.

The movie is based on Barbro Lindgrens popular and absurd comical books Loranga, Masarin & Dartanjang (1969) and Loranga, Loranga (1970). The movie is about the worlds greatest dad that loves pop music and refuses to get a job - because who would then play with his son Masarin? Lorangas dad Dartanjang lives in the woodshed to prevent germs from getting to him. But that does not seem to help because he keeps getting sick all the time.

Maria is 8 years old and thinks her younger brother is really annoying. She meets Makka in the neighborhood who has a magic ball. In some way Maria wishes her brother away. When the babysitter Gerda turns up Maria and Makka think she's the answer to Maria's wish - a witch that has come to abduct her brother. Maria who deeply regrets her wish must now do everything in her power to stop Gerda.
