A three-part video epic in which avant-garde artist Vito Acconci explores the relationship between the self and national mythology. Through multiple vignettes, Acconci brings together a collage of music, photographs, diorama, experimental theater and his own profile, to tell a semi-autobiographical narrative that, in turn, becomes a critique of the alienated quality of American mythology.

A finales de la década de los 60, el clima de cambio social y político llevó a una nueva generación a crear un estilo de vida alternativo. A la edad de 22 años, Arlo emprende un viaje con el que pretende encontrar un lugar para sí mismo y su música. El viaje incluirá una visita a su padre gravemente enfermo en el hospital, actuaciones en Nueva York y diversión con sus amigos Alicia y Ray, que regentan un pequeño restaurante en Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Pero cuando un incidente en el "Restaurante de Alicia" juega un papel importante en la maniobra de Arlo para evitar ser llamado a filas, se desencadenan una serie de acontecimientos que éste considerará un pequeño precio a pagar para conservar su libertad y sus creencias...
