Tras finalizar su servicio militar, Asa se dispone a regresar a su pueblo natal en la agreste estepa de Kazajistán, donde su hermana mayor y su marido son pastores de ovejas. Pronto aprenderá que si quiere tener su propio rebaño deberá encontrar una mujer con la que casarse. El problema es que las jóvenes solteras no abundan en la zona. Tulpan, hija de una familia de pastores, parece la única candidata posible, pero ella tiene otros planes: abandonar el campo para poder estudiar, y la única excusa que se le ocurre para rechazar a Asa es que tiene las orejas muy grandes. A pesar de ello, Asa no se rinde y, con la colaboración de su amigo Boni, se esforzará en demostrar a todo el mundo que puede ser un buen ovejero y un adecuado pretendiente para Tulpan.

In the nearby small town aggression begins to grow again the unwanted guests; the house have been promised to the local people for housing purposes... The lives and fates of Jola, Andrzej, and father Jan become increasingly intertwined with one another...
