Cuba, 1958. Dictadura del general Batista. Jack Weil (Robert Redford), un tahúr profesional, se encuentra en La Habana con la intención de jugar la partida de póker de su vida. Vive completamente al margen de la política, pero en seguida se da cuenta de que la ciudad es un auténtico nido de espías, policía secreta y revolucionarios castristas. Gil and Hank are two independent truckers who run into problems when they are forced to pay off traffic managers to get loads. They also have to pay off highway cops when their rigs are overweight and bank loans but consider themselves lucky just to be able to keep up the interest payments.
