Han er norgesmester i jazz, rockehistorisk kjent for som plateprodusent å ha skapt "Bergen Beat", Norges variant av "Mersey Beat". Men det var da han inntok Fjernsynet på midten av sekstitallet at han erobret landet med sin til tider frekke og frodige humor. Sammen med Harald Heide-Steen jr. ble han begrepet Wesensteen, med feriebiskop Fjertnes, Rotfruktrådet, doble fustasjopphengsforkoblinger og mye annen galskap. Alene ble han Fleksnes i evig kamp med Modern, Olderdølen Bør Børson jr., Hovmester Leopold i Sommer i Tyrol, Jeppe i musikalen med samme navn, og mange andre typer.
