Following the death of her multi-millionaire husband, Alma is left alone in their luxurious villa. Driven by a compulsion to do good, she invites homeless mother Marina to take shelter in her house. This simple act gives a new meaning to Alma’s life: she decides to turn the entire property into a refuge for people in need. Alma is prepared to pour everything she has into this fragile utopia, but reality can fracture even the deepest convictions.

Masha is over thirty. Rented apartment, no husband, no children, no lover. A few years ago, she conquered Moscow and shone on stage, but the years go by, and the body is not getting younger, and the size leaves much to be desired. Fate in the person of the “former” takes her to the foot of Elbrus, where Masha meets old acquaintances and new great feelings.

This war drama is dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). It revolves around Pavel Zubov, a school teacher whose village was occupied by the fascists. Being a teacher is his calling in life. He believes in such basic human values as love and family. However, a certain chain of events changes the way he perceives life and leads him to a darker view of reality. In this time of war, as the enemy shows its true face, he must make an uneasy choice to either survive and adapt to the new regime or fight for his family, love, homeland, ideals, and beliefs.

Lyudmila Pavlichenko es una joven estudiante rusa que, durante la guerra, se vio obligada a alistarse en el ejército en el año 1941. Eleven comedic vignettes featuring conversations – some important, some less so – held in restaurants over coffee and cigarettes (how quickly time flies – cigarettes are banned in Russia’s restaurants now). The conversations are candid, and even veer into the territory of murder. In the final credits, the director apologizes to Jim Jarmusch, whose work (in the anthology Coffee and Cigarettes, which Jarmusch shot in pieces over many years) Oldenburg-Svintsov is clearly indebted to. Sex, Coffee, Cigarettes’s kinship with Jarmusch’s film extends to the fact that superstars play tiny roles in almost all of the vignettes.

A mysterious black ball is after the heroine. She runs away from it and manages to give the brooch in an exquisite pirouette movement, as shiny as diamond facets. What gives a stone its dazzling luster are its polished facets. But the real gem is love, and it's much harder to get than any diamond in the world.
