1981年、犯罪が多発する大都会ゴッサムシティ。ピエロの仕事をしているアーサーは貧しく、老いた母親ペニーと暮らす上、突然笑いだしてしまうという心の病に悩むが、TV界の人気司会者フランクリンを憧れの対象にして日々耐え忍んでいた。ある日、失業したアーサーは地下鉄で、女性客に嫌がらせをしていた男性3人組を偶然持っていた拳銃で皆殺しにしてしまう。以後アーサーは、自身の心にあった怒りを解放させていく。

As the Joker visits Metropolis with a plan to kill Superman for Lex Luthor, Batman pursues the clown to Superman's turf.

3人の子供を抱えるシングル・マザーのエリンは子供を抱えていては職探しもままならず、信号無視の車に衝突される交通事故に遭う。こちらに過失のない事故だから絶対に勝てると弁護士のエドワードはエリンの弁護を請け負うが、陪審員の目には加害者が医師であるのに対し、エリンは社会的な信用が低く、証言時の言葉遣い悪さも災いして、金目当ての当たり屋と相手側に匂わされた結果敗訴してしまった。事故で負傷したにもかかわらず賠償金を得ることも出来ず、生活に窮したエリンはエドワードに、勝てる裁判で負けたのだから代わりに仕事を斡旋するように要求、半ば強引に彼の事務所で働くようになる。

不況時代のアメリカ30年代に実在した男女二人組の強盗、ボニーとクライドの凄絶な生きざまを描いた、アメリカン・ニューシネマの先駆け的作品。ケチな自動車泥棒だったクライドは、気の強いウェイトレスの娘ボニーと運命的に出会い、コンビを組んで強盗をやりはじめる。二人は順調に犯行を重ねていくが……。アカデミー賞2部門を受賞（助演女優賞エステル・パーソンズと撮影賞）した。
