ロサンゼルス上空に、突然いくつもの巨大飛行物体が飛来する。そこから発せられる青い光は誘蛾灯のように見たものを引きつけ、飛行物体は集まった人間たちを次々と吸い上げていく。偶然この街に来ていた青年ジャロッドと恋人エレインは、友人宅の高層マンションからこの恐るべき光景を目撃していた。ビルから脱出する計画も失敗に終わり、むなしく救助を待つ彼ら。やがて、ようやく現われた軍が決死の反撃を試みる。
