ジェームズ・ディーン主演による彼の代表的作品。酔った17歳の少年ジムが警官に捕まった。その晩に起こった集団暴行事件の容疑者として警察に連行された彼は、そこで美しいジュディと、まだ子供のようなプラトーと知り合う。間もなく二人は帰宅を許され、ジムも温情ある少年保護係のレイ主任の取り計らいで帰ることができたが、この三人の出会いは、やがて彼らの持つやり場のない苛立ちを露呈する事件へと結びついてゆく……。

科学の飛躍的な発展の結果、労働者たちは地下に押しやられ、巨大な工場で家畜同然に管理されている一方、資本家たちは地上で享楽的生活を送っている。社長の息子は地下に降りて、彼らの悲惨な生活を知る。労働者の娘マリアは、労使間に人間的な絆が皆無であることを仲間に訴え、これがストライキの気運を生む。そこで社長はマリアを監禁、彼女そっくりの人造人間を作って事態収拾にあたるが、人造人間は狂い始める。

ネオ(キアヌ・リーヴス)は自分の生きている世界に違和感を覚え、やがて覚醒する。そして、マトリックスにとらわれているトリニティーを救出するため、さらには人類を救うため、マトリックスと再び戦うべく立ち上がる。
