Racial tensions arise when a black lawyer runs for mayor of a racially divided town.
都市伝説について研究している大学院生のヘレンは、黒人居住区に伝わる「キャンディマン」の伝説を調査していた。「キャンディマン」とは、鏡の前でその名前を5回唱えると現れ、名前を呼んだ者を右腕に取り付けた鉤爪で殺害するという、伝説の殺人鬼であった。 その伝説に懐疑的だったヘレンは、面白半分に鏡の前で「キャンディマン」の名前を5回唱えてしまう。それを境に、彼女の周囲で奇怪な殺人事件が次々と起きるようになる。
