アイオワ州の田舎町に住むレイ・キンセラは貧乏農夫。若い頃に父親と口論の末に家を飛び出して以来、父の顔を見る事も、口をきく事すらもなかったことを悔やんでいた。ある日、彼はトウモロコシ畑を歩いていると謎の声「それを造れば、彼が来る」と耳にする。彼は、周囲の人々があざ笑うのをよそに生活の糧であるトウモロコシ畑を切り開き、小さな野球場を造り上げる。
