天才科学者セバスチャンは、国家の極秘プロジェクトとして生物の透明化と復元を研究している。彼と研究チームは、動物実験において透明化を実現していたが、その状態が長時間続くと精神に影響が及んで凶暴性が増してしまい、復元も成功できる物では無かった。ある日、セバスチャンは透明化した生物を復元させるための薬の開発に成功するが、彼はこの事を国家には報告せず、チームの反対を押し切り、自らを使って初となる人体実験を行う。

天才科学者のリチャーズは、元恋人のスー、スーの弟でパイロットのジョニー、そして親友のベンとともに、宇宙に出て実験を行うことになった。だが事故により宇宙線を浴びて4人とも超能力を得てしまう。彼らはこの力を世のために役立てようと考え、スーパーヒーローチーム「ファンタスティック・フォー」を結成する。
