南北戦争時代のアメリカ。北軍の士官として参軍したネイサン・オールグレン大尉は南軍やインディアンと戦いの中、無関係のインディアン部族を攻撃し、子供たちを撃ち、良心の呵責に悩まされ酒浸りになる。日本の実業家の大村はバグリー大佐を介し軍隊の教授職として雇いに来ていた。当時の日本は明治維新で近代国家建設のために急速な近代的軍備増強が必要だった。多額の報酬に魅せられたオールグレンは、僚友ガントとともに日本に渡り、軍隊訓練を指揮する。

高校生のフランクは尊敬する父が母と離婚すると聞き、ショックで衝動的に家を飛び出してしまう。そして、生活のため偽造小切手の詐欺を始めるようになる。最初はなかなかうまくいかなかったが、大手航空会社のパイロットに成りすますと誰もがもののみごとに騙された。これに味をしめたフランクは小切手の偽造を繰り返し巨額の資金を手に入れるのだったが…。

ニュー・オリンズ。“希望の家”で働くシスター・ヘレンは死刑囚マシューからの手紙を受け取り、彼と接見する事になった。マシューは相棒が無期懲役なのに自分が死刑になる事に憤りを感じている。ヘレンは特赦を得ようと弁護士の協力を仰ぐが嘆願は却下され、残るは州知事への直訴だけとなった。被害者の両親たちからは敵と見なされ非難を浴びるヘレン。しかし毎日、アドバイザーとしてマシューと会い話をしていくうちに二人の心は繋がっていく。が、やがて処刑の日が訪れた……。

カリフォルニア州ミラマー海軍航空基地。そこにF－14トムキャットを操る世界最高のパイロットたちを養成する訓練学校、通称“トップガン”がある。若きパイロットのマーヴェリックもパートナーのグースとともにこのトップガン入りを果たし、自信と野望を膨らませる。日々繰り返される厳しい訓練も、マーヴェリックはグースとの絶妙なコンビネーションで次々と課題をクリアしていく。しかしライバルのアイスマンは、彼の型破りな操縦を無謀と指摘する。その一方で、マーヴェリックは新任の女性教官チャーリーに心奪われていく。

ハーヴァード大学出のエリートFBI捜査官のジョニー・ユタ（キアヌ・リーブス）は、ロサンゼルスのベニス･ビーチで続発する銀行強盗の調査をベテラン刑事のパパス（ゲイリー・ビジー）とともに任される。犯行は歴代大統領の覆面[3]を被り、わずか一分半で盗みを終えるプロフェッショナルによるものだった。二人は事件の場所から犯人をサーファーであると推測し、捜査を開始する。 彼は早速、潜入捜査のためサーファーに成りすまし、強盗団のリーダーであるボディ（パトリック・スウェイジ）と女性サーファーのタイラー[4]（ロリ・ペティ）と出会う。ボディは、ジョニーが大学生時代にフットボールのクォーターバックとして活躍していたのを知っており、そのこともあってジョニーはすんなりとサーファーグループと浜辺でのフットボールやサーフィンで絆を深め合っていくことができた。そしてタイラーとも恋人同士の関係になっていくのだった。 ある日パパスとジョニーは同じ車に乗っていた。パパスが「何か食い物を買ってこよう」とファーストフード店へと向かう。そしてその瞬間にジョニーは覆面の強盗集団の犯行を目撃する。すぐさま車で後を追うジョニーだったが、間一髪のところで逃げられてしまう。 追ってきた捜査官がジョニーであることを確認したボディはタイラーを拉致。ジョニーをスカイダイビングに誘いスカイダイビング後に、タイラーの命と引き換えにジョニーに銀行強盗に協力するよう脅迫する。

1890年代の米国南部。戦死したと思われていたジャックが6年ぶりに帰還し、妻や村人たちは動揺する。しかも、粗野だった彼は温和な性格に変わっていて……。謎めいたラヴ・ストーリー。
