ジェーンは幼いころに両親を亡くし、寄宿学校では不当な扱いを受けるが、何があっても前向きさを失わず、自由な生き方を探していた。卒業した彼女はソーンフィールド館の家庭教師となるが、3カ月たったある日、郵便を出しに出かけたジェーンは見知らぬ男性の馬を驚かせ落馬させてしまうが、彼こそが館の主ロチェスターだった。横柄で気難しいロチェスターはジェーンの清らかな魂に心打たれ、2人は次第に惹かれあうようになる。
