アンリ・ジョルジュ・クルーゾーがドイツ占領下で作った一作。占領軍の指令で作られたこの映画は、フランスの地方都市の腐敗を描くという初目的がゲシュタポ批判に変ってしまっているとの理由で上映を禁止された。

1917年、司祭に任ぜられたファーモイルは聖ヨハネ教会の助任司祭として就任した。しかし、リアリストの主任司祭と理想を追うファーモイルは対立し、自分の意見を発表するために本を著した。これがボストン大教区の枢機卿グレノン大司教に知れ、いなかの貧しい教区に転任させられが、ここで病身をおして教区の人たちに心を砕く神父に会い、謙遜の尊さを知る。グレノン大司教はファーモイルの成長を知り、再び自分の下に呼びもどし秘書とした。ボストンの家に帰ったファーモイルは妹モナが異常妊娠で苦しむのを目の当たりにするが聖職につく身では堕胎をすすめられず妹は亡くなる。

ホーマーはセント・クラウズの孤児院で生まれ育った。親代わりのラーチ院長の仕事である助産と当時は禁止されていた堕胎の仕事を手伝う彼だが、やがて自身の将来に不安を抱き始める。ある日、ホーマーは手術に訪れた若い女性キャンディとその恋人の軍人ウォリーと共に孤児院を飛び出した。彼はウォリーの誘いで彼の母親オリーヴが経営するリンゴ園で働き、収穫人たちの宿舎サイダーハウスで暮らし始めるが・・・。
