40歳を過ぎた広告マンのレスター・バーナムと上昇志向たっぷりの妻キャロリン。彼らの家庭生活に潜む歪んだ真実が徐々に暴かれていく。妻は夫を憎み、娘のジェーンは父親を軽蔑している。そして会社の上司はレスターにリストラによる解雇を告げる。そんな毎日に嫌気が差したレスターは、人生の方向転換を図る。しかし、自由と幸せを求めるレスターを待ち受けていたのは、あまりにも高価な代償だった。

20世紀のどこかの国。情報省はテロの容疑者「タトル」を「バトル」と打ち間違えてしまい、無関係なバトル氏を無理やり連行していく。それを一部始終見ていた上の階に住むトラック運転手のジルが抗議をするも、全く相手にされない。 一方、情報局に勤めるサムは、このミスをなんとかするために試行錯誤していた。近頃サムは、夢の中でナイトの格好をして、美女を助け出すというおかしな夢を見ていたが、情報省に抗議に来ていたジルがその美女にそっくりだということに気づく。 ある日、サムが家に帰るとダクトが故障しており、非合法のダクト修理屋と名乗るタトルが勝手に直してしまう。サムはまた夢の中でサムライの怪物と戦い、美女を救う夢を見る。サムはジルの正体を知るために断っていた昇格を望み、友人であったジャックの元を訪ねる。そして、様々な事柄が複雑に絡まりあっていく。

An almost bombproof method of staying single is called "speed dating". 18 people participate in such an event. Nine men and nine women are sitting opposite each other in order to sell optimally under the pressure of time and to find a partner. They are looking for a date - and have nothing else in common. They talk about allergies, cappuccino, consumer behavior, buses and designer clothes: the list of serious embarrassments is long. Yet none of the lonely hearts has given up the hope of romance.

In Los Angeles, a colorful assortment of bohemians try to make sense of their intersecting lives. The moody Dark Smith, his bisexual girlfriend, her lesbian lover and their shy gay friend plan on attending the wildest party of the year. 恋人に振られ傷心のヨーンがある日仕事から帰宅すると、隣室の美人から家具を動かしてほしいと声を掛けられる。彼女は姉妹で住んでいて、初対面にもかかわらず彼の日常を把握しているかのごとく謎めいた発言を繰り返し、姉アンネの留守中、暴行された過去を持つ妹キムはヨーンを誘惑。姉妹の不可解な言動に振り回され、ヨーンの日常はゆがみ始めていく。

ローズとクリストファーは、娘・シャロンの奇妙な言動に悩んでいた。ローズは、しばしば情緒不安定に陥り、何かに取り憑かれたかのように「サイレントヒル…」と謎のうめき声を発する娘に心を痛め、サイレントヒルという街が実在することを知り、治療のためにシャロンを連れてそこを訪ねることにする。しかし、サイレントヒルは30年前の大火によって多数の人々が死亡した忌まわしい場所であり、今では誰も近付かない廃墟と化した街であった。途中、女児誘拐犯と勘違いされて女性警官に追われるものの、二人とも帰り道が突如切れ無くなった街に取り残され、シャロンも後部座席から消えており、捜索、他の住人への聞き取りなど進めていくが不思議な現象に巻き込まれてゆく。
