マンハッタンのウエスト・サイド。イタリア系の若者からなるジェット団と、プエルトリコ系の若者からなるシャーク団は不良グループ同士、町で顔を合わせればにらみあうという一触即発の関係だ。しかし、ジェット団のリーダー、リフの親友であるトニーは、シャーク団のリーダーであるベルナルドの妹、マリアと出会って、互いに一目惚れしてしまう。やがてリフとベルナルドがけんかした末、ひとりが命を落としてしまう事件がおこる。

シェイクスピアの名作を現代に舞台を移して甦らせた、バズ・ラーマン監督作品。プロットや台詞を原作から忠実に引用しながらも、設定や映像はあくまで現代風、という大胆な脚色が話題に。主演はレオナルド・ディカプリオとクレア・デーンズ。

On the first day at his new school, Cameron instantly falls for Bianca, the gorgeous girl of his dreams.
