シカゴ郊外の住宅街。弁護士のカルビンは長男をボート事故で失って以来落胆したままの日々を送り、妻のベスは同じ事故で生き残った次男コンラッドへつらく当たっていた。そんなコンラッドも自分が兄の死の現場にいあわせたという事実の重みに耐えかねて自殺未遂を図り、心の病を治すための施設に入院。４カ月後、退院したコンラッドは自分の学校に再び通いだすが、カルビンはそんな彼を今度は精神分析医のセラピーに通わせる。
