ギリシャの美しいリゾート地、カロカイリ島。小さなホテルを営む母親ドナのもとで育ったひとり娘ソフィに恋人スカイと結婚する日が近づく。自分の父親を知らないソフィはこの機に乗じ、自分の父親である可能性が高い男性3人、建築家のサム、銀行マンのハリー、冒険家のビルに、自分の結婚式に出席してほしいと手紙を出す。そしてそれを読んだサムたち3人がカロカイリ島を訪れる。

韓国で実際に起きた未解決殺人事件をリアルな演出で映画化。86年、ソウル近郊の農村で、同じ手口による若い女性の惨殺事件が連続して発生。地元の刑事パク・トゥマンとソウル市警から派遣された刑事ソ・テユンは対立しながらも捜査を続け、有力な容疑者を捕らえるのだが。監督ポン・ジョノは99年に「ほえる犬は噛まない」でデビュー、2作目の本作で韓国のアカデミー賞・大鐘賞の作品賞・監督賞・主演男優賞・照明賞を受賞。
