ベルトルッチらしい美しい場面で綴る、魅惑的な輪廻転生譚。案内役となるのはアメリカ・シアトルの9歳の少年ジェシー。突然訪れた三人のラマ僧が彼の前にひざまずく。少年を仏陀の生まれ変わり、活仏だと言うのだ。父と共に未知のチベットに旅した少年は、そこで太古の偉大な王子ゴータマの伝説を学び、その姿を目の当たりに見て仏性に目覚めていく。インド・ロケによる王子が栄華を極めるシークェンスや、彼が悟りを開いて仏陀となるシーン等、SFXも絶妙で、映像的には大変見応えがある。

複雑な親子の幸せ探しを描き、多くの映画祭で高く評価されたハートフル・ストーリー。女性になる手術を控えた性同一性障害のブリーフと、彼を父とは知らず一緒に旅することになった息子・ブリーフのふれあいを描く。
