禁酒法時代のシカゴ。失業中のミュージシャン、ジェリーとジョーは偶然、殺人現場を目撃してしまい、ギャングのボス、スパッツから命を狙われるはめに。やむなく2人は女性だけの楽団に女装してもぐりこみ、寝台列車でマイアミに向かう。魅力的なウクレレ奏者シュガーにすっかり惚れ込んだ彼らだが、ジョーは、マイアミで富豪に変身して彼女に再接近を図る。一方のジェリーは、初老の富豪オズグッド三世から求愛を受けてしまう。

オーストラリアで実際に起こった謎の女生徒失踪事件の映画化。映画は、１９００年２月２４日、ピクニックに出掛けた名門女子学園の生徒たちの内数名が忽然と姿を消してしまったこの事件を、独特の色彩美で、かつ神秘的な雰囲気で描いてゆく。この“美しさ”がキーワードとなり、いわゆる“ホラー”とは違った意味での“怖さ”がある作品。オーストラリア時代には「ザ・ラスト・ウェーブ」や本作のように幻想的な作品を手掛けていたＰ・ウィアーの秀作。

Twenty years ago in the sleepy mining town of Valentine Bluffs, a fatal mining disaster occurred on Valentine's Day while some of the crew was decorating for a party. The sole survivor of the accident killed the remaining crewmembers and warned the town not to celebrate Valentine's Day again.
