クリント・イーストウッド4年ぶりの主演作は、愛弟子のロバート・ロレンツ監督作。家庭を顧みずメジャーリーグのスカウトマンとして生きてきた父と、彼との間にわだかまりを抱く一人娘を描いたハートウォーミング・ストーリー。

1970年代、毎年2人が事故で死亡するF1の世界で伝説となった2人のレーサーが存在した。 ジェームズ・ハントは野性的思考であり、毎日を人生最期の日の様に謳歌する豪放なプレイボーイで、勘を活かした走りを得意としていたイギリス人。ニキ・ラウダは「コンピュータ」と評される論理的思考であり、レーサーのイメージとはかけ離れた勤勉な男で、工学の知識を活かして自らマシンを整備する走りを得意としていたオーストリア人。全く正反対の性格の2人はやがてライバル関係となり、度々レースで競い合う仲になる。 そして1976年― シーズン成績1位を独走するラウダとそれを追うハント。ドイツグランプリのその日は朝から豪雨でニュルブルクリンクの状態が悪かったため、レースを決行するべきかどうか審議が行われた。ラウダは中止を主張したが、ハントは決行を支持し、最終的に予定通り開催されることとなった。しかし、そのレースでラウダはクラッシュし、生死をさまよう重症を負ってしまう。ハントは彼のクラッシュの原因が自分にあると考えショックを受けるが、その後のラウダが参加できないレースでラウダとの差を埋めていく。一命は取り留めたラウダは、病院でその様子を見て奮起し、事故後わずか42日後にレースに復帰する。

1993年のアメリカ合衆国アーカンソー州ウェスト・メンフィス。5月のある日、三人の児童が行方不明となり、後に無残な死体となって発見された。後に地元警察は、容疑者として三人のティーンエイジャーを逮捕する。三人はオカルトとヘヴィメタルが好きな地元の問題児たちで、悪魔崇拝者による猟奇殺人と決め付けた地元警察は、無罪を主張する彼らを強引な手法で追い詰めていくのだった。一方、そんな警察の捜査に疑念を抱いた私立探偵のロン・ラックスは独自に調査に乗り出す。また、被害児童の母親の一人であるパム・ホッブスも、真犯人は別にいるという疑念を次第に抱くようになる。

これは、まだ円堂守率いる雷門中サッカー部のフットボールフロンティアの時の話。雷門中サッカー部は、フットボールフロンティア決勝戦に進出。だが世宇子中との決勝戦に挑む雷門中の前に現れたのは、世宇子ではなく「王牙（オーガ）学園」と名乗る、未来から送りこまれた戦闘集団だった。あまりの強さに敵わない雷門イレブン。そしてピンチの時、円堂カノンが未来から吹雪やヒロト達を連れてくる。

実在のミドル級ボクサー、ジェイク・ラモッタの栄光と挫折の半生。試合シーンの壮絶な迫力は筆舌に尽くし難く、ボクシング映画としてのクォリティも高いが、あくまでも作品の根底にあるのは、自らの猜疑心によって妻や弟を失う男を描いた人間ドラマ。引退後のシーンのため体重を25キロ増やしてまで破滅型の主人公を演じきったデ・ニーロはアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞。全編のほとんどを占める白黒画面も美しい。
