人間にペットとして飼われているが、TV番組のヒーローに憧れるカメレオン。車で飼い主と移動中に事故に遭い、入っていた水槽ごと砂漠に放り出されてしまう。初めて広い世界に出たカメレオンは途方に暮れるが、寂れた荒野の町“ダートタウン”にさまよい着く。酒場で町の住人たちにランゴと名乗ったカメレオンは、でたらめな武勇伝を語った結果、町の保安官に任命されてしまう。その頃、町は深刻な水不足に見舞われていた。

1950年代のパリ。場末の劇場やバーで手品を披露していた老手品師のタチシェフは、スコットランドの離島にやって来る。この辺ぴな田舎ではタチシェフの芸もまだまだ歓迎され、バーで出会った少女アリスはタチシェフを“魔法使い”だと信じるように。そして島を離れるタチシェフについてきたアリスに、彼もまた生き別れた娘の面影を見るようになり……。

原作はルイス・R・フォスター（Lewis R. Foster）の『ミネソタから来た紳士』。 主人公スミスは田舎のボーイスカウトのリーダーだったが、死亡した上院議員の代わりに、政界に担ぎ出される。スミスはそこで政治の腐敗と単身対決することになる。
