18世紀を代表する仏文学者、マルキ・ド・サド侯爵の晩年を描いたドキュメンタリー。猥褻文書の罪で監禁、ますます執筆活動にのめりこむサド侯爵と、その著書に翻弄された人々をユーモアたっぷりに描いた真実の物語。

1841年、マサチューセッツ州ニューベドフォード。イシュメイルは安宿で知り合った銛打ちと意気投合し、老朽の捕鯨船ピークォッド号に乗り込む。その船の船長エイハブはかつて“白鯨”と呼ばれる巨大なクジラに片足を喰いちぎられており、その復讐に燃えている。この航海の目的もそれで、今度こそ“白鯨”の息の根を止めるつもりのエイハブの目には既に狂気に似たものがあった。“白鯨”を倒す執念に憑かれたエイハブの凶行は、次第に船員たちの命までも危険に晒していく……。

南北戦争時代のアメリカ。北軍の士官として参軍したネイサン・オールグレン大尉は南軍やインディアンと戦いの中、無関係のインディアン部族を攻撃し、子供たちを撃ち、良心の呵責に悩まされ酒浸りになる。日本の実業家の大村はバグリー大佐を介し軍隊の教授職として雇いに来ていた。当時の日本は明治維新で近代国家建設のために急速な近代的軍備増強が必要だった。多額の報酬に魅せられたオールグレンは、僚友ガントとともに日本に渡り、軍隊訓練を指揮する。

舞台は南北戦争の時代。北軍の大佐ショーは初めての黒人部隊の指揮官となった。兵士の大多数は南部からの脱走奴隷だったが、ショーは彼らに誇りと熱気を感じていた……。男たちの栄光を描く感動巨編。

Although not the first feature-length animated film, as is sometimes thought, it was the first cartoon to feature a character with an appealing personality. The appearance of a true character distinguished it from earlier animated "trick films", such as those of Blackton and Cohl, and makes it the predecessor to later popular cartoons such as those by Walt Disney. The film was also the first to be created using keyframe animation.

Originally intended to be the first of six films, director Abel Gance realized the full project would be nigh impossible, and never raised the money to complete the other five. The film's legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.
