1961年バージニア州。頭脳明晰なアフリカ系女性キャサリンはNASAで働くことになるが、NASAでも有色人種に対する差別は全体的に広く残り、労働環境は厳しいものだった。やがてキャサリンは、NASAでは白人を含むすべての女性が差別されていることに気付き始める。そして1961年5月、ケネディ大統領はアメリカ人宇宙飛行士の月面着陸を実現することを表明し、キャサリンたちに活躍する機会が与えられていく。

1967年の夏、アメリカ・ミシガン州デトロイトで大規模な暴動が発生し、街が騒乱状態となる。2日目の夜、州兵集結地の付近で銃声が鳴り響いたという通報が入る。デトロイト警察、ミシガン州警察、ミシガン陸軍州兵、地元警備隊は、捜査のためにアルジェ・モーテルの別館に入る。数人の警官が、モーテルの宿泊客相手に捜査手順を無視した尋問を開始。自白を強要された宿泊客たちは……。

南アフリカ人のティム・ジェンキンは、白人でありながら反アパルトヘイト組織「アフリカ民族会議」の隠密作戦をおこなった罪のより、同胞のスティーブン・リーとともにプレトリア刑務所に投獄される。ティム、スティーブンたちは、自由と平等を手にするため、最高警備を誇る刑務所からの脱獄を決意する。さまざまな脱獄方法を模索した結果、ティムたちが最後に選んだ手段は木片を集めた鍵を使った脱獄だった。鍵を作っては解錠を繰り返し、徐々に出口までの鍵が完成していった。投獄から18カ月、彼らは木鍵による鉄製扉の突破を試みる。
