8歳の少年マックスはシングルマザーのママと姉と3人暮らし。マックスはある日、大好きな狼の着ぐるみを着て悪さをするが、それにママは激怒。その悔しさから家を飛び出したマックスは偶然見つけたボートに乗って海へ。やがてマックスがたどり着いたのは、大きな体を持つ不思議な“かいじゅう”たちが大勢暮らす島だった。マックスはなりゆきからその島に王様として迎えられ、みんなが幸せに暮らせる王国を作ろうとめざす。
