物質移動と遺伝子組み換えについて研究している科学者セスは、物質を別の空間に転移する新装置“テレポッド”を発明する。セスと出会った雑誌記者のベロニカは装置のことを特ダネにしようと彼に提案し、やがて2人は愛し合う仲になる。やがてセスは自ら“テレポッド”の実験台になるが、装置の中に1匹のハエがまぎれ込んでいたせいで、彼の肉体に異常な変化が。なんとセスの肉体に、少しずつハエのような特徴が現われてくる。

チャイナタウンの骨董屋で発明家ペルツァーが手に入れた不思議な動物モグワイ。彼はそれを息子ビリーへクリスマス・プレゼントとして贈るが、モグワイには、水に濡らさないこと、太陽光線に当てないこと、真夜中すぎにエサを与えないことの三つの誓いが必要だった。だが、この誓いが破られた時、可愛いモグワイは恐るべき凶悪な怪物グレムリンへと増殖していく。かくして平和な田舎町キングストン・フォールズは悪夢のクリスマスを迎えることになるのだ。
