Escape in the Desert (1945)

An exploration —manipulated and staged— of life in Las Hurdes, in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura, Spain, as it was in 1932. Insalubrity, misery and lack of opportunities provoke the emigration of young people and the solitude of those who remain in the desolation of one of the poorest and least developed Spanish regions at that time. (Silent short, voiced in 1937 and 1996.)

Kieslowski’s later film Dworzec (Station, 1980) portrays the atmosphere at Central Station in Warsaw after the rush hour.

カリフォルニア州の砂漠地帯にある刑務所から受刑者が脱獄する。受刑者の名はアルバート・ギャンズ、強盗殺人の前科がある危険な男だ。ギャンズは共犯者ビリー・ベアと共にサンフランシスコに逃亡する。 次の日、サンフランシスコ市警察本部のジャック・ケイツ部長刑事は、同僚の刑事2人と共に非行少年が潜伏しているホテルに踏み込む。ところが、そこにいたのは非行少年ではなく、ギャンズたちであった。激しい銃撃戦となり、刑事2人は射殺されてしまう。 ケイツは、ギャンズのかつての仲間であり現在は服役中のレジー・ハモンドというチンピラから手掛かりを引き出そうとする。「ギャンズを捕まえるために自分を刑務所から出して協力させろ」と要求するハモンドに対して、48時間の期限付き仮出所を取り付けたケイツ。ハモンドは仮出所できた解放感からか、女を口説くなど軽薄な行動をするが、その度にケイツを苛立たせる。
