　脚本家チャーリー・カウフマンは「マルコヴィッチの穴」の成功で、一躍次回作を期待される存在となった。そんな彼のもとにある日、仕事の依頼が舞い込んでくる。それは、作家スーザン・オーリアンがフロリダで蘭を不法採集した栽培家ジョン・ラロシュを描いたノンフィクション『蘭に魅せられた男』の脚色。だが、チャーリーはさっそく作業を始めるものの、全然アイデアがまとまらず悶々とした日々が続く。一方、彼とは対照的に陽気な双子の弟ドナルドも脚本家めざして養成セミナーに通い始め、あっという間に脚本家デビューを果たす…。
