ユダヤの王子ジュダ＝ベン・ハーは、親友であり養子で弟となったメッサラによって、当時ユダヤの地を支配していたローマ帝国の軍隊に対して反逆行為を行ったという身に覚えのない罪で、終身刑を宣告され、奴隷の身でガレー船の漕ぎ手にされてしまう。さらに、母親と妹もローマの牢獄に投獄され、その獄舎でハンセン病に罹ってしまう。ベン・ハーは悲運と幸運に翻弄されながら、奴隷が漕ぐ死のガレー船から生還し、二輪戦車の乗り手となって、最後には家族を探し求めてユダヤの地に戻り、憎きメッサラへの復讐を誓う。

The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra bets against the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar, that her people are still great, even if the times of the Pharaohs has long passed. She vows (against all logic) to build a new palace for Caesar within three months. Since all her architects are either busy otherwise or too conservative in style, this ambivalent honor falls to Edifis. He is to build the palace and be covered in gold or, if not, his fate is to be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis calls upon an old friend to help him out: The fabulous Druid Getafix from Gaul, who brews a fantastic potion that gives supernatural strength. In order to help and protect the old Druid, Asterix and Obelix accompany him on his journey to Egypt. Sentenced to spend out the rest of his adult life laboring in the harsh deserts of Egypt, the Thracian slave Spartacus gets a new lease on life when he is purchased by the obese owner of a Roman gladiator school.
