フィラデルフィアの一流法律会社に務めるアンドリュー・ベケット（トム・ハンクス）は、ある日突然エイズと宣告され、ウィラー社長（ジェイソン・ロバーズ）に解雇される。不当な差別に怒ったベケットは、損害賠償と地位の保全を求めて訴訟を決意。だが、次々と弁護を断わられた彼は、以前敵同士として渡り合ったやり手の弁護士ジョー・ミラー（デンゼル・ワシントン）を訪ねる。ミラーはエイズに対して、抜きがたい恐怖を感じていた。しかし、世間の冷たい視線に対しても毅然と対処し、熱心に資料を漁るべケットの姿に、ミラーの心は動かされる。ミラーは弁護を引き受け、母のサラ（ジョアン・ウッドワード）をはじめ、ベケットの肉親たちは彼に熱い支援を約束する。解雇から7カ月後、〈自由と兄弟愛の街〉フィラデルフィアで注目の裁判が開廷した。ミラーは解雇が明らかな法律違反だと主張したが、対する会社側の主任弁護士ベリンダ（メアリー・スティーンバージェン）は、彼の弁護士としての不適格性を激しく突く。予断を許さぬ裁断の行方と並行して、ベケットの症状は次第に悪化していく。裁判を優先させて本格的治療を先に延ばそうとする彼に、恋人でライフパートナーのミゲール（アントニオ・バンデラス）は苛立つ。ベケットは恋人のため、自分のためにパーティを開く。遂にベケットは裁判中に倒れ、病院に運ばれた。ミラーは原告側の勝訴の報を、ベッドの上のベケットに告げる。数日後、大勢の人々に見守られながらベケットは静かに息を引き取り、ミラーはかけがいのない友の死を実感した。

「ライトスタッフ」で一躍有名になったP・カウフマンが68年のチェコ動乱、いわゆる“プラハの春”を題材にして描いた超大作。若者の間に芽生えた民主化要求の波がソ連軍の軍事介入で圧殺されていく中、プレイボーイの医師と二人の女の青春が鮮烈に描かれる。古いニュース・フィルムと本編の画調を完璧に合わせるという離れ技を、ベルイマン作品で鳴らした名カメラマン、スヴェン・ニクヴィストが見事にやってのけている。

The plane carrying wealthy Charles Morse crashes down in the Alaskan wilderness. Together with the two other passengers, photographer Robert and assistant Stephen, Charles devises a plan to help them reach civilization. This film records the photo shoots and includes interviews with the performers and commentary from eight writers (and John Waters). The actors and writers discuss economics, nudity and exhibitionism, careers, and private lives.
