The Burning is Stephen Frears’ first film, a chilling exploration of racial tensions in Apartheid-era South Africa. On a sweltering summer’ day, a wealthy white matriarch insists on taking her household on a planned trip to the country, in spite of their urgent warnings that an uprising is underway.
クリスマス間近のロサンゼルス。黒人2人組に車を盗まれた地方検事のリック夫妻。白人警官のライアンはパトロール中、裕福な黒人夫婦に屈辱を味わわせた。ペルシャ人の雑貨店主ファハドは、ドアの修理に来た黒人ダニエルと口論になる。やがて、彼らの人生は思いがけない形で交錯する。
1942年、ミュンヘン出身の若い女性ユンゲはヒトラーの個人秘書の職を得る。それから月日は流れて1945年、第2次世界大戦は大詰めを迎え、ヒトラーはごく限られた身内や腹心の部下たちとベルリンのドイツ首相官邸の地下要塞に逃げ、そこで不自由な生活を送る。敗北の気配が濃くなる中、ヒトラーはまだ反撃のシナリオを熱っぽく語るが次第に部下たちは彼から離反していき、ユンゲは歴史の証人としてその光景を静かに見守る。
1962年、ボルチモア。ぽっちゃり体型だが前向きな16歳の女子高校生トレーシーは人気TV番組「コーニー・コリンズ・ショー」の憧れのキャスト、リンクと踊る日を夢見る。そんな時トレーシーは母エドナの反対を押し切って番組のオーディションに参加して一度は落選するが番組を司会するコリンズの目に留まり、レギュラー出演者の座を獲得。やがてトレーシーには黒人の友人が増えるが、番組が黒人を差別していると気付く。
1970年代初頭、まだ人種差別が大きな問題となっていたアメリカで実際にあったエピソードを基にしたスポーツ・ヒューマン・ドラマ。1971年、バージニア州。とある町で白人の高校と黒人の高校が統合されることになる。その結果、両校にそれぞれあったフットボール・チームも1つに統合されることとなった。人種差別が根強い地元住民が反発するなか、アメリカ初の人種混成チームが誕生、さまざまな苦難を乗り越え、チームはひとつにまとまっていく……。
