A Woman Alone (1936)

1940年、連合軍の兵士40万人が、ドイツ軍によってドーバー海峡に面したフランス北端の港町ダンケルクに追い詰められる。ドイツ軍の猛攻にさらされる中、トミーら若い兵士たちは生き延びようとさまざまな策を講じる。一方のイギリスでは民間船も動員した救出作戦が始動し、民間船の船長ミスター・ドーソンは息子らと一緒にダンケルクへ向かうことを決意。さらにイギリス空軍パイロットのファリアが、数的に不利ながらも出撃する。

ヴァージニア州の町で生まれ育ったデズモンド・ドスは、第２次世界大戦が激化し周囲の人々が次々出征する中、彼は人を殺さず助けるならと衛生兵として陸軍に志願する。厳しい訓練には耐えていたが、銃に触れることを断固拒絶し上官と兵士たちの嫌がらせが始まる。恋人ドロシーとの結婚式の日、銃の訓練を終了せねば休暇は許可しないと言われ、命令拒否として軍法会議にかけられるが最終的に主張は認められる。1945年、沖縄。「ハクソー・リッジ」に到着した第77師団の兵士たちだったが武器を持たない彼はには過酷な戦いが待ち受けていた。

1944年、第二次世界大戦下のドイツ。若き中尉トミー・ハートはドイツ軍に捕まり、5万人もの連合国軍捕虜が囚われているムースブルグ捕虜収容所に送られてきた。ある日、その収容所内で死体が発見される。死んでいたのは人種差別主義者として知られていたアメリカ人捕虜で、一人の黒人アメリカ兵に殺人の容疑がかけられる。ロースクールの学生だったトミーは彼の弁護を買って出るが、独自に調査を進めていくうち、収容所内でアメリカ人捕虜を仕切っていたマクナマラ大佐の存在に行き着く。

第1次大戦がはじまってまもない、ドイツのある町。群衆の歓声に送られて、戦場へ向かう大部隊が進軍してゆく。学校の教室では、老教師が生徒に愛国心を説いていた。情熱に駆り立てられた若者たちは、ただちに出征を志願するが、前線は飢えと死の恐怖だけの毎日だった。
