Navy Blues (1929)

Popeye is a super-strong, spinach-scarfing sailor man who's searching for his father. During a storm that wrecks his ship, Popeye washes ashore and winds up rooming at the Oyl household, where he meets Olive. Before he can win her heart, he must first contend with Olive's fiancé, Bluto.

The sailor of legend is framed by the goddess Eris for the theft of the Book of Peace, and must travel to her realm at the end of the world to retrieve it and save the life of his childhood friend Prince Proteus.

When a woman's father goes missing, she enlists a local to aid in her search. The pair soon discover that her father has died at the hands of a wealthy sportsman who hunts homeless men as a form of recreation.

軍隊という管理下に置かれた人間のやりきれない気持ちをコメディ・タッチで描いたアメリカンニューシネマの佳作。基地の募金箱から40ドルぽっちを盗もうとした罪で8年の実刑が決まったダメ水兵を下士官2人が休暇気分で護送することになる。3人はやがて奇妙な連帯感で結ばれていくが……。

『雨に唄えば』の黄金コンビ、ジーン・ケリー＆スタンリー・ドーネンが送る傑作ミュージカル。フランク・シナトラのヴォーカルも聴くことができる贅沢な作品で、アカデミー賞ミュージカル音楽賞も受賞している。
